Nongtang, or the unique architectural form of alley in China’s Shanghai, blends Chinese architectural tradition with western influence. It is one of the most typical features of modern Shanghai architecture as well as Shanghai local culture and history. Nongtang has been the most common living space for Shanghaiese, inseparable from their lives. In Shanghai’s further modernization process, many old buildings and neighborhoods are being demolished or renovated, and Nongtangs are increasingly being surrounded by modern buildings and skyscrapers and gradually disappearing from Shanghaiese’s life.
